The 4th of July is right around the corner, and Huntsville is already getting a head start on the fireworks. This weekend has butterflies, fat cat birdhouses, fireworks over the Tennessee River, and a Monday night concert in the park to close it all out. Grab the sunscreen and let’s go!

There's something genuinely special about watching a butterfly flutter from your child's palm into the warm air of the Purdy Butterfly House. These Saturday morning releases combine a brief educational presentation about butterflies and their habitat with the hands-on experience of helping restore the indoor butterfly population. It's a quiet, magical moment that resonates with children who are just beginning to understand their connection to the natural world — and it makes for wonderful photos that capture the wonder on their faces.
What to expect: this is one of those rare experiences where the official photographer (you) actually gets cooperative subjects, at least for a few seconds before they fly away.
Perfect for: Kids around ages 5-10 seem particularly enchanted by the combination of gentle handling and dramatic flight, though families with preschoolers and middle schoolers will find plenty to appreciate in this hands-on conservation experience.

🎵 Ditto Landing’s Independence Day Celebration 🎵
Huntsville
Ditto Landing’s annual Independence Day Celebration takes place this weekend! Gates open at 5:00 PM, live music begins at 6:00 PM, and a fireworks display over the Tennessee River starts at 9:00 PM.

☀️ Concerts in The Park: Ty Blackwell & Brett Carlisle & The Mason Jar Prophets
Amphitheater at Huntsville Botanical Garden
The Arts Council and the City of Huntsville’s Department of Parks and Recreation collaborate to host Concerts in the Park. The Concerts, which are held every summer for ten weeks on Monday evenings, begin the first Monday in June and conclude the first Monday in August.
The series showcases a mix of musical genres from rock and roll, pop, and top 40 to swing, country, bluegrass, Celtic, and jazz. The Concerts take place in downtown Huntsville on the Huntsville Museum of Art outdoor stage in Big Spring International Park from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. The series is free to the public; concertgoers should bring their own seating, and leashed pets are welcome.

💡 My Weekend Picks
If I had to narrow it down…
Butterfly Releases - I remember doing a project similar to this in fourth grade. It was pretty cool seeing the butterflies take flight for the first time!
Ditto Landing’s Independence Day Celebration - This event combines the best of everything in summer! Music, water, great company! This one is going to be one I do not want to miss out on this year!
Concerts in The Park - Who doesn’t love a good reason to eat from a food truck!?! Add in the gorgeous Big Spring location with some great music? I am in!

📝 Before You Head Out:
It’s officially summer in the South. Highs in the high 80s this weekend, climbing into the mid-90s by Monday, with a low-to-moderate rain chance Friday and Saturday. Bring water, bring sunscreen, bring a backup plan if the sky decides to open up.
Most of this weekend’s events are free or close to it, and if you’re heading to Ditto Landing, remember the $5 parking is cash only… don’t get caught at the gate.
If you end up at any of these, come say hi! I’ll be the dad at Ditto Landing, pretending I’m watching the fireworks while really just watching my daughter watch the fireworks. It’s the better show anyway.
