Hey Parents! 👋
For a lot of us, this was it... the first week of school. New backpacks, early alarms, and that strange quiet house feeling. Whether your crew is settling into routines or squeezing out the last drops of summer, this weekend has the goods: toddler art at the museum, a wild foraging hike, market treasures at Lowe Mill, and adoptable pets who would love to meet you!

Artsy Tots! Shape Trucks
Huntsville Museum of Art
Little ones with big imaginations will love this hands-on introduction to art at the Huntsville Museum of Art. Through artful storytelling, playful gallery activities, and a take-home art project, your toddler will practice color recognition, fine motor skills, and hand-eye coordination while discovering that museums can be welcoming spaces for even the youngest visitors.
What to expect: Two session times available: 10:00-10:45 am or 11:00-11:45 AM
Perfect for: Ages 2-3
Pro tip: Plan to arrive a few minutes early so your toddler can settle in before storytime begins.

Foraging Hike at Harvest Square
Harvest Square Nature Preserve
Ever wonder what wild edibles grow right here in North Alabama during the late summer? This educational foraging hike at Harvest Square Nature Preserve offers families a chance to learn about native plants and fungi that can be safely harvested and prepared at home. Led by experienced forager Casey Lanier, participants will search for seasonal finds like persimmons, wild grapes, maypop, and other August treasures. The route will be determined by Casey based on what's currently available in the preserve, making each hike a unique learning experience.
What to expect: This hike emphasizes identification and education only—participants won't be collecting or consuming anything during the walk itself.
Perfect for: Families with curious children who enjoy nature and don't mind a slower pace will find this especially rewarding
Pro tip: Consider bringing water, sun protection, and comfortable walking shoes for the August heat.
Cost: Free!

Lowe Mill Outdoor Market
Lowe Mill
The Outdoor Market runs from 11 AM to 4 PM on Saturdays between April 4 and October 24, 2026, with admission being free to all visitors. The market is weather-dependent, so it's wise to check Lowe Mill's social media before heading out on particularly iffy days. Since the venue already houses over 160 working artist studios, galleries, and performance spaces, families can easily extend their visit by exploring the indoor corridors if they arrive early or want to escape the heat—Lowe Mill's air-conditioned hallways are filled with working studios where artists often welcome visitors.
What to expect: This isn't your typical farmers market—you'll find everything from handcrafted jewelry and pottery to vintage treasures and fresh produce.
Perfect for: Everyone!
Pro tip: Bring reusable bags for your finds, and consider arriving closer to opening time for the best selection, especially if you're hunting for specific handmade items.
Cost: FREE

💡 My Weekend Picks
If I had to narrow it down…
Foraging Hike at Harvest Square - I know it is still pretty warm, but this one could be extremely useful if you spend time outdoors!
HAS Adopt-on-the-Spot - I am not quite in the market for new wheels or paws… but that doesn’t mean we won’t stop by while we are out and about. I can always love on some cats even if I can’t take one home.
Lowe Mill Outdoor Market - You can always find some amazing things here. Especially with school coming up, I can’t wait to see what all is here this week!
That’s it for this week.
📝 Before You Head Out:
It’s becoming a bit of a tradition: Friday looks manageable, Saturday looks soggy. With a 75% rain chance Saturday, check Lowe Mill’s social media before driving out to the market, and keep an eye on the radar if you’re joining the 8 AM foraging hike… the early start might just beat the storms. The adoption event has the showroom if the sky opens up, and honestly, is there a better place to wait out the rain than one full of kittens?
If you end up at any of these, come say hi! I’ll be the dad at the adoption repeating “we are NOT getting a car” with steadily decreasing confidence.
Happy adventuring,
Ryan 🚀
